Kristian Mercado Figueroa – 2020 Short Finalist
A story told via the perspective of a Taino Indigenous mother and daughter during Puerto Rico's colonization. We experience their day to day lives and the violent shift as we explore the practice of slavery and usage of Hawk Bells during that time period.
Kristian Mercado Figueroa is a Puerto Rican filmmaker living in Spanish Harlem whose music-driven short film “Pa’lante” won the SXSW Jury Award 2019. Winner at SLAMDANCE for screenwriting 2020. Kris also directed Comedy Specials coming to Netflix for Hannibal Buress and SNL’s Sam Jay slated for a summer release. Kris was an official selection at SXSW 2020 for both Black Pumas and Miami Nights. Screening at dozens of festivals; New Orleans, Atlanta, SIFF, Havana Film Festival, and more. Mercado’s distinct voice addresses issues of identity, family, and systemic oppression across race and class. His work is celebrated for its poetic portrayal of working-class struggles, highlighting the gaps between love and loss.
Mercado has directed content for Billie Eilish, Awkwafina, Migos, De La Soul, MF DOOM, Planned Parenthood, Bad Bunny, and Adult Swim, among others. His screenplay Mela has just received a Cinereach grant.
He’s planning to expand Hawkbells into a feature-length script.
