Steven Soderbergh explains visual storytelling with Raiders of the Lost Ark

Steven Soderbergh, the writer/director of such films as Sex, Lies, and Videotape and Solaris, offers a fascinating take on “staging” in motion pictures.

As filmmakers know, telling a story on screen is inherently different than telling a story through prose, so in order to study the subtleties of the language of film, Soderbergh turned to the classic Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Soderbergh found that by removing the original sound, score, and color, he could concentrate on the staging of each composition. To make the viewing experience more pleasurable, Soderbergh elicited help from Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) to provide an alternative soundtrack.
