Emma Thompson on screenwriting, crying, and yoga

Emma Thompson (writer of Sense and Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice,  Nanny McPhee, and others) gave a wonderful lecture to the British Academy of Film and Television Arts where she discussed her work as a writer/actress, including a scene from Sense and Sensibility that still makes her cry.

“I wrote that speech early on and never changed it because it made me cry,” Thompson said. “As we performed it, Hugh [Grant] said, ‘Are you really going to do that? Cry through my whole speech?’ ‘I said, ‘Yeah, because it’s funny. It’ll work.’ He thought, ‘Oh God, alright.’ But of course he did it beautifully.”
