BlueCat Box Office Update: Straight Outta Compton Staying Strong – We Are Your Friends Falls Hard

Straight Outta Compton beat out Christian themed War Room to take the top spot at the weekend box office for the third weekend in a row. The N.W.A. biopic brought in $13.2 million, down 49.8% from last weekend. War Room, the story of a married couple looking to mend their relationship through prayer, opened to $11 million, a notable haul considering it showed on nearly one third the number of screens as Straight Outta Compton.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation continues a strong run, coming in at number three with $8.3 million in its fifth week. The fourth spot goes to No Escape, an action thriller starring Owen Wilson and Pierce Brosnan in which a family moves to a new home abroad but soon find themselves in the middle of a war zone. No Escape pulled in just under Rogue Nation with $8.28 million. The horror sequel Sinister 2 rounds out the top five with a modest $4.7 million.

The music-focused drama We Are Your Friends proves that a film’s marketing cannot fall solely on the name of its leading actor. The Zac Efron led film tanked in its opening weekend, bringing in a disappointing $1.8 million, making it one of the ten worst openings of all time.
