2014 Rules & Guidelines

Awards

  • The Feature Winner of the 2014 Competition will receive $15,000. Four Feature Finalists will receive $2500 each.
  • The Shorts Winner of the 2014 Competition will receive $10,000. Three Shorts Finalists will receive $1500 each.
  • The Cordelia Prize will be awarded to the Best Feature screenplay written by a screenwriter residing in the UK and will receive $1500.
  • The Joplin Award will be awarded to the Best Feature screenplay written by a screenwriter residing outside the USA, Canada or the UK and will receive $1500.
  • All screenplays entered by August 1st, 2013 will be automatically entered in our Title Contest. Three winners will be determined by the votes of current 2014 BlueCat entrants and awarded $250 each.

Screenplay Analysis Schedule

  • Short screenplays submitted on May 15th, 2013 will receive their written analysis by June 1st, 2013. ($35 entry fee)
  • Short screenplays submitted by June 1st, 2013 will receive their written analysis by June 15th, 2013. ($40 entry fee)
  • Feature screenplays submitted on June 15th, 2013 will receive their written analysis by July 1st, 2013. ($55 entry fee)
  • All screenplays submitted by July 1st, 2013 will receive their written analysis by July 15th 2013. ($60 Features, $40 Shorts)
  • All screenplays submitted by August 1st, 2013 will receive their analysis by September 1, 2013. ($60 Features, $40 Shorts)
  • Scripts submitted by September 1st, 2013 will receive their analysis by October 1st, 2013. ($60 Features, $40 Shorts)
  • Scripts submitted by October 15th, 2013 will receive their written analysis by November 10th, 2013. ($65 Features, $50 Shorts)
  • Scripts submitted by November 15th, 2013 will receive their written analysis by March 1st, 2014. ($70 Features, $60 Shorts)
  • All analyses will be returned by March 1, 2014.

Short Screenplay Submission Deadlines and Fees

  • Each entry will receive one analysis.
  • Opening Day ($35 Entry Fee): Entries must be postmarked or received electronically on or before May 15th, 2013.
  • Early Deadline ($40 Entry Fee): Entries must be postmarked or received electronically on or before September 1st, 2013.
  • Regular Deadline ($50 Entry Fee): Entries must be postmarked or received electronically on or before October 15th, 2013.
  • Final Deadline ($60 Entry Fee): Entries must be postmarked or received electronically on or before November 15th, 2013.

Feature Screenplay Submission Deadlines and Fees

  • Each entry will receive two analyses.
  • Opening Day ($55 Entry Fee): Entries must be postmarked or received electronically on or before June 15th, 2013.
  • Early Deadline ($60 Entry Fee): Entries must be postmarked or received electronically on or before September 1st, 2013.
  • Regular Deadline ($65 Entry Fee): Entries must be postmarked or received electronically on or before October 15th, 2013.
  • Final Deadline ($70 Entry Fee): Entries must be postmarked or received electronically on or before November 15th, 2013.

Resubmission Deadline and Fees

  • Any screenplay submitted by October 15th, 2013 can be resubmitted by November 15th, 2013 for the reduced fee of $40.
  • Resubmission entries will receive one analysis.
  • Entrants will have the option of selecting one of their original reader(s) or a new reader upon resubmission.
  • If your selected reader is not available, you will be offered the option of receiving a refund or choosing a new reader.

Competition Results Announcement Schedule

  • Top Ten Percent will be announced February 1st, 2014.
  • Quarter-Finalists will be announced February 15th, 2014.
  • Semi-Finalists will be announced March 15th, 2014.
  • Finalists will be announced April 1st, 2014
  • The Winner will be announced April 10th, 2014.

Eligibility

  • Submitted scripts must be original screenplays, and the sole property of the applicant(s).
  • All ages are eligible.
  • All entries must be in English.
  • Feature screenplays must be between 75 and 125 pages in length. Absolutely no exceptions.
  • Short screenplays must be between 5 and 40 pages in length. Absolutely no exceptions.
  • There is no limit to the number of screenplays you may submit.
  • All entries must be uploaded in PDF format.
  • Under absolutely no circumstances will substitutions of either corrected pages or new drafts of the entry screenplay(s) be made. Screenplays will not be returned.
  • If a submitted screenplay becomes optioned or purchased between the time of submission and the end of the judging period, that screenplay will no longer be eligible.
  • Competition judges, readers and employees of the BlueCat Screenplay Competition, past and present, and their immediate friends and families, are not eligible to enter.
  • Previous winners of the BlueCat Screenplay Competition are not eligible.
  • Screenplays that have previously won any screenplay contest, competition or award of any kind are not eligible.
  • Screenplays submitted under a pen name will be immediately disqualified.
  • Screenplay titles can not be changed upon resubmission under any circumstances.
  • Screenplays that have been submitted to any competition or contest prior to November 15th, 2010 are not eligible.
  • Past and present scripts consulted on through Gordy Hoffman’s screenplay consultation service or the BlueCat workshops are not eligible.
  • Past USC students of Gordy Hoffman are not eligible.
